The Art Of The Lure

So what is a lure?

By definition a lure is to tempt (a person or animal) to do something or to go somewhere, especially by offering some form of reward.

So what is the reward we are offering and how does a lure pertain to rp?

The reward we offer is good rp where both characters involved have their need/ desires/ whatever it is you seek fulfilled.

A lure in rp is a post we put out. Usually in a group chat that is meant to draw in another rper.  A lure is not meant to tell your entire story (unless it's your introduction to the sim). It is meant to tell where you are, what your doing, why your doing it and it's meant to give an "in" to a partner to come find you.

So you want a few hints and tricks to posting a good lure?

  • Be descriptive. (remember this is your first impression on other rpers and the more information you give them the more they have to work with)
  • Never ever ever post the same lure twice. Even if it's different group chats for different sims. This will lead people to believe you are a lazy writer or one of those people who keeps a notecard of posts then copy and pastes. Keep it fresh to keep people interested.
  • Always be true to your character. meaning if your always at the library and your writing a lure stating your at the porn studio you better have a damn good explanation that people can follow.
  •  Have fun. If the lure feels forced then people may not be drawn in.

So an example of a bad lure:

After a long day at work I decided to run home and take a shower hoping to wash all my cares away.

What makes it bad?

it's not very descriptive.

It doesn't give anyone an "in"

How do we turn a bad lure into a good lure?

After a long day at work Kiera's achy feet needed a rest. She had made her way back home sluggishly she pushed her way through the door. Her head in a million places she left the door to her house cracked forgetting to lock it. Dragging herself up stairs to the second floor she quickly undressed climbing into the shower. Hoping to wash all her cares away.

It's good because it gives insight into the characters mood, it gives another character an "in" to a scene, it's descriptive yet simple and it something that makes sense to the character,

Another Example of a not so good lure:

After another long day at the library she found herself at the porn studio though not sure why.

Lets make it better now:

The library had been full all day. Bustling students preparing for tests had her brain and feet running all day. Working around students all day made her feel as though she had let the best years of her life slip past her. Life had become boring, mundane. Determined to get out of her rut Kiera made her way over to the porn studio. She stood outside feeling her heart pound in her chest unsure if she would be brave enough to enter. Silently she stood there still dressed in her knee length pencil skirt and white button down blouse. Hair pulled up in a bun she obviously didn't look like a typical porn star, but maybe if she stood here long enough she would find the courage to walk in.

So now that we have the hang of lures do you have any advice on lures?
